The number of children infected with HIV/AIDS continues to rise, and as of June 30, 1998, children with AIDS in the United States totaled 8,280. The latest statistics indicate that the number of children orphaned by AIDS in North America has reached a staggering 70,000. In our region alone, we know of hundreds of families facing the devastating impact of this disease. Children in these families may be coping with the terminal illness of a family member, the death of one or both parents, or their own HIV/AIDS infection. The effects of living with AIDS/HIV leaves little time for a child to enjoy childhood. Within the Philadelphia area, 3 people die of AIDS every day and the transmission of HIV/AIDS is at its highest rate ever.
